BEAVIS and Butt-head probably couldn't find Sweden on a map. But to hear MTV tell it, the cable network's moronic duo are practically ambassadors for American popular culture abroad. The "Beavis & Butt-head" cartoon has spread the gospel of MTV to more than 260 million households in 70 countries. Now, though, the boys are being overshadowed by the likes of Heike Makatsch, a 24-year-old blonde who appears on Viva, a music-video channel in Germany owned by four major record companies. By featuring German acts like Ms. Makatsch and Tote Hosen over imports like Van Halen, Viva has built as big an audience as MTV in a fraction of the time.

Star Television Venture Is Aimed at China

Star Television Ltd., the Asian satellite broadcaster owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, has formed a joint venture aimed at breaking into China's restricted cable television market, a Star Television spokesman said today. The Phoenix Satellite Television Company will purchase and produce Mandarin-language programs in China and broadcast them throughout China and Asia, said Douglas Gautier, a company spokesman. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Ex-Premier Revives Libel Suit in Singapore

The Former Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew, has revived a libel suit against an American educator to seek damages over a 1994 article that Mr. Lee says implied that there is corruption in Singapore. The article, by Christopher Lingle, was printed in October 1994 by the Paris-based International Herald Tribune, which is jointly owned by The New York Times and The Washington Post.

COMPANY NEWS;COMPUTER LEASING FIRM FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY

A computer leasing firm that contends it was duped in a bank scam filed for bankruptcy court protection from its creditors yesterday. Nelco Ltd., based in Richmond, was tricked in a scheme by a former employee of the Philip Morris Companies to secure $323 million in loans from at least six banks, the F.B.I. charged last week. Nelco, a privately owned company, said it lost a substantial amount by arranging the leases of computer equipment that the loans were to finance. The banks then called in some of their loans, which forced Nelco to file for bankruptcy protection, said Richard A. Nelson, the chief executive.

COMPANY NEWS;MEDTRONIC PLANS TO PURCHASE INSTENT FOR $200 MILLION

Medtronic Inc. said yesterday that it had agreed to acquire Instent Inc., a maker of stents used in medical procedures, for about $200 million. Under the agreement, Medtronic will exchange 0.3833 of a share for each of the 10 million Instent shares, plus options outstanding. The purchase would expand Medtronic's line of stents, which are devices used to hold open passageways in the body that may have closed or become obstructed. Instent is based in Eden Prairie, Minn., and has operations in Tel Aviv. The company had 1995 revenue of about $2.4 million.

Software Spectrum Inc. agreed yesterday to acquire the corporate, government and education division of Egghead Inc. for $45 million. Software Spectrum said the purchase would increase its presence as a reseller of computer software to businesses and organizations. The acquisition would also roughly double the company's annual revenue to $767 million. The sale would allow Egghead, which operates 164 software stores, to focus on its core software retailing business. Egghead said it would retain the division's inventory and receivables, which it said it planned to liquidate.

Digicon Inc., which acquires seismic data used to search for oil and natural gas, said it agreed yesterday to a stock-swap merger worth about $72 million with a Canadian competitor, Veritas Energy Services Inc. Under the agreement, the acquisition will be structured as a tax-free pooling of interests, in which each Veritas share will be exchanged for 0.80 Digicon share, or about $8.50 worth of Digicon stock.

A furious gun battle between troops and separatist guerrillas in Kashmir's holiest shrine today killed at least three people and raised fears of a widespread public uprising. Guerrillas have occupied the white marble, onion-domed mosque in Srinagar, the state's summer capital, for more than a year. But until now, security forces had avoided fighting in the ancient Hazratbal mosque, which holds a sacred relic that Muslims believe is a hair of the Prophet Mohammed.
