British Prices Up; Strikes Cut Output; BRITISH PRICES UP; STRIKES INCREASE Three Thresholds Crossed

Brit Govt announces 1.4% increase in May retail prices and 16% rise for 12-mo period ended in May; labor unrest, involving hundreds of thousands of workers, continues as production at number of cos, including Brit Leyland Motor Corp and Gen Electric Corp, are disrupted; workers are seeking wage raises to offset cost of living increase; most of work stoppages began earlier in wk in anticipation of Govt rept on consumer price index, which is considered nation's chief indicator of inflation; more than 60 strikes, most of them wildcat walkouts, are currently in progress; strikers chief point of contention is 'threshold' pay worked out by former Prime Min Heath's Conservative Govt in effort to forestall labor strife; under plan, unions are entitled to pay increases amounting to $1 a wk every time retail price index moves 1 point above specified level; estimated 8-million workers theoretically are covered by threshold agreements, while others contend they ought to be covered automatically; employers are balking at wage increases, maintaining they do not have enough funds to pay laborers because of Govt price ceilings; Brit Leyland claims that threshold payments, if granted, would add nearly $100-million to annual wage bill, which might put co out of business; there is speculation that concern, which lost $40-million in 1st qr, fiscal '74, may be taken over by Govt; Brit Indus Confed warns that some concerns will face bankruptcy in autumn and unemployment will rise if present corporate profit squeeze continues; disputes Govt contention that corporate profits rose 10% in 1st qr, contending that real profits actually declined 30%; London Exch deputy chmn Dundas Hamilton comments (M)
